Nitrofurantoin is a nitrofuran antibiotic used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections.8,9,10 Nitrofurantoin is converted by bacterial nitroreductases to electrophilic intermediates which inhibit the citric acid cycle as well as synthesis of DNA, RNA, and protein.
